Natalia Shlyupikova is the October Student of the Month.  Natalia is in her second year of ESL classes at the AEC where she studies from 8:00 – 12: 25 four days a week.  She comes to class prepared and ready to learn every day.  She is friendly and well-liked by all her classmates.

Natalia and her husband Yury came to the United States from Russia two years ago to be near their daughter and grandchildren.  They are from a beautiful city in Russia called Cheboksary. It is located on the Volga River about 10 hours east of Moscow.  Natalia is retired now, but she worked as a physician in Russia for 45 years. Natalia stays active, and she and her family enjoy doing outdoor activities together.  In Russia, they went cross-country skiing, hiking, and camping.  Since she’s been in Fort Smith, she enjoys swimming and playing volleyball with her family.

Natalia and her husband were brave to leave their home and country to start a new life in the United States.  With the love and support of their family, however, they are facing their new challenges with grace and determination.

We wish Natalia continued success in learning English.

Congratulations, Natalia!  You are doing great!

Meet Maha Abed, our September Student of the Month! Her teacher writes, "Last year Maha began the year in my basic math class. I quickly realized her potential and encouraged her to try a more advanced class. She attended both of the classes for the rest of the year and improved by leaps and bounds while juggling the responsibilities of wife and mother.

This year she has entered the GED classes and is about to venture into the Fast Track Program.  She is one of the hardest working, most dedicated students I have ever had. She stays on task and is very inquisitive. There is a special twinkle in her eyes when she grasps a concept that a teacher really appreciates. Maha rarely misses class, but if she does, she works even harder upon her return.

Maha possesses many characteristics making her a perfect example of a student of the month. She has a friendly and inviting personality. New students are drawn to her. I have often seen her help other students better understand a concept. A quick wit and good sense of humor make her a pleasant person to have in class.

As much as Maha will be missed at Fort Smith Adult Education, I fully expect to see her moving on to more advanced schooling in the near future. She will be just as successful there as here."

Maha is pictured here with her teacher, Kathy Langford, and her daughter, Gema.
