It’s with great joy that we announce Phung Bui as the FSAEC’s January Student Success Story!

Upon her arrival from Vietnam in July 2014, Phung wasted no time in enrolling in our center’s ESL classes. Her diligent study habits, passion for learning, perseverance, and belief that education is the key to a better life contributed to her rapid advancement to our Pre-GED classes. From there, it was just a short matter of time before she earned her GED and enrolled at UAFS. Now a dental hygiene major in her first semester, she is staying busy adjusting to the pace and demands of college life.

Phung’s former instructors and classmates at the AEC would be hard-pressed to describe her as anything other than an exemplary individual who brought her best to school every day. When asked to offer advice to newcomers, she suggests that persistence is essential in navigating the arduous early stages of adapting to the different language, customs, and educational systems that one encounters when moving to another country.

Phung, we are extremely proud of you and wish you the best in your future endeavors!

Edgar Duran has been selected Student of the Month for January. He was chosen because of his determination to earn a GED despite several obstacles.

Edgar is married and has two grown children. He also has a four year-old special needs son who requires around-the-clock care, much of which is Edgar’s responsibility.  It was during his son’s seven month stay in the intensive care unit in a hospital when Edgar decided he wanted to work in the field of nursing. He realized improving his English skills and earning a GED were the first steps in attaining his goal.

Along with Edgar’s tremendous responsibilities at home, he works two part-time jobs to support his family. He is unable to attend his adult education classes each day, but he makes the most of the time he is present. Edgar exhibits his desire to obtain a GED by being attentive, engaged, and polite while attending his classes. He works vigorously at learning as much as possible.

Earning a GED will not be an easy path for Edgar, but with his work ethic and determination, he will someday. He is a perfect example of someone who, despite obstacles, is willing to do what it takes to achieve his goal.

Congratulations, Edgar!

The Year of the Rooster starts this Saturday, January 28 with the Tết Nguyên Đán (Tet) or Vietnamese New Year.  Tet is the most important celebration in the Vietnamese culture.  It takes place on the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar.

During Tet families and friends get together to cherish the good memory of the past year, share love and respect for each other, and to wish each other a great year ahead.  Their celebrations include traditional Vietnamese dishes, dragon dances and lucky money in red envelopes.

The Fort Smith Audlt Education Center will be closed on Monday, January 16 for the Martin Luther King Day Holiday.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 17.
