Darlene Schweyer has been selected Student of the Month for January.  She enrolled in the adult education program in the fall of 2015 after losing her job of 15 years due to an accident that left her unable to lift more than one pound. Darlene stayed home for a while, but soon decided to enroll in the Fort Smith Adult Education Center and work toward earning her GED.

Darlene was nervous when she first enrolled, as she had not been in school for several years. But, she quickly made friends at FSAEC and fit in well with the other students. From day one, it was obvious to her teachers and to the other students that she wanted to learn and to earn her GED.  Part of her determination to meet her goal is to set a good example for her 3 grandchildren who live in Tulsa with her son and daughter-in-law.  Darlene wants the best for them and wants them to understand the importance of having a good education.
Darlene is always friendly, encouraging, and helpful to others, and she is truly happy for the other students when they accomplish a goal. She is very attentive in class and asks questions when she doesn’t understand something. Her skills and her test scores have improved due to the effort she has exhibited.
Along with academic improvement, Darlene’s self-esteem has also increased. She always has a smile on her face and has indicated that enrolling at FSAEC was one of the best decisions she has ever made. Success is certainly in Darlene’s future!
