Entries for 2011

The entire staff of the Adult Education Center had a special holiday luncheon at Taliano's Restaurant today. In lieu of a gift to the director, the staff made a generous donation to Developmental Wings, Inc., a local nonprofit that provides customized educational, developmental, and advocacy programs for people with autism and developmental disabilities in under-served populations in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. Student of the Month Mirna Galicia, with teacher Jason Garvey

Congratulations to Mirna Galicia, our December Student of the Month. Mirna made the decision to hit the ground running when she began attending ESL classes in April. Mirna’s success with her acquisition of English has been fueled by her consistent attendance, desire to learn, and willingness to participate in class. Although she believes that learning English is a challenging process, Mirna knows that she can persevere by being an active learner. She is a prepared student who asks insightful questions in class and never fails to complete her assignments. Her positive attitude in and out of the classroom has played a major role in her progress and will definitely help realize her goals of having long conversations with friends who do not speak Spanish and helping her son with his homework. It has also allowed her to make new friends with whom she enjoys practicing her English.

During her free time, Mirna likes spending time with her family and going shopping on the weekends. She especially enjoys taking walks in the park with her children and grandson.

Despite the fact that learning English is a consuming activity, Mirna believes that all of the work that she and her classmates put into it is completely worth it. Mirna hopes to use her English skills to get a desirable job and eventually obtain her U.S. citizenship. We are certain that her dedication and diligence will ensure that her personal expectations will be met. We are lucky to serve Mirna and are very proud of her accomplishments and progress.

Thanks to the Jr. League of Fort Smith for a great Christmas party!  Our pre-schoolers sang, met Santa, reenacted Los Posados, and finally had cupcakes and punch, not to mention presents!   Thanks to Jr. League volunteers Renee Carman, Katy DeJaeger, Beashua Spearman, Pat Wittle, Patty Boschert, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus!!

Stephanie Douglas and Adult Education/WAGE Advisory Board member Alex Sanchez, both from Arvest Bank, conducted practice job interviews with students from our Career Readiness and Technology for Career Success classes.  They are pictured here with student Shirley Carter. A big thanks to Alex and Stephanie!

Pre-schooler Daniel and his father Ricardo enjoy time together at our Bright Start Early Learning Center's "Donuts for Dads" this morning.
